Goat farming in India has a long history, dating back to about 10,000 year. Today, India stands first in terms of goat population and milk production. Goat’s milk is traditionally known for its medicinal properties and has recently gained importance in human health due to its proximity to human milk for easy digestion and its all-round health promoting qualities.
One third of the global population resides in India and China. India has currently a population of 1.33billion which is expected to reach1.65 billion by 2050 and by 2050, we are expected to surpass China in terms of number of stomach to feed. We cannot sustain as a nation with ever increasing hunger. Thus nutritional security must be addressed with high protein diet which is anyway highly effective than any other dietary component.
“Backyard Poultry Farming” may be one of the effective tools to improve the socio-economic status of marginal farmers through employment and income generation, alleviating malnutrition besides reducing migration from rural to urban areas. Conservation of desi chicken and development of improved crosses for rural poultry has been one of the mandated activities of ICAR-Central Avian Research Institute.
